Safety Tips When Using Ridesharing Apps

The way people commute and travel when not driving their own vehicles has been revolutionized by the introduction of Ridesharing apps which allow users to connect with drivers around their location. Such apps as Uber, Lyft, Curb, Moovn, Gett, Juno, Via, Summon and Way2Ride. You simply download the app, sign up and you are good to go. Uber has emerged as the preeminent rideshare company. They have gained massive popularity globally. You can go to any destination you want. However, despite the Uber network doing remarkably well in the market, ridesharing apps popularity has not been without their own issues.  In rare instances, some users have reported being assaulted by impostors. For instance, on Oct 16, 2016 a former Uber driver from Boston was sentenced to 12 years in jail for kidnapping, aggravated rape and assaulting his female victim. So here are some precautions user can take before using Uber and other transport services;

  1. Verify the driver’s identity and that of the car before you even get in

From the Uber app, you can view the driver’s first name, their photo, the vehicle’s license plate, a photo of the vehicle and the rating of the driver. With all this information, riders are able to stay safe by detecting face drivers. The driver on his side also verifies the account holder to make sure they are picking the correct person. The official way to request a ride is through the app not from the street.

  1. You should wait indoors for your ride to come pick you up

Another benefit that comes with using the Uber app is that you receive a notification the moment your driver arrives. So there’s no need of waiting in the dark street corners where it’s not safe at all. This ensures that you as the rider you stay in the comfort of your house, hotel room or anywhere else that you might be.

  1. Stay in touch with your family and friends

In addition to providing you with information about the driver, the app also allows you to notify your contacts about your whereabouts in case something happens. This feature allows the contacts you share the trip details with, monitor your movement along the distance and they can see when you reach your destination.

  1. Consider the driver’s rating on the app

Another important feature that helps the user in choosing the ride is the rating system. It lets you know whether the driver has good or bad behaviors, therefore, you can make an informed decision to ride or not to ride with them. This system discourages any form of potential misconduct from the driver and the passenger as well since they get to rate each other.
